As we transition into a new year and we ponder on how last year went, we may not have been completely satisfied with how much time, we, as mothers, incorporated self-care in our daily regimens. Do not be dismayed, 2021 can be the year to begin practicing self-care. Instead of new year resolutions, strive for positive lifestyle changes. You may think positive lifestyle changes are almost impossible to achieve. Be encouraged, because nothing is ever impossible if you have the right mindset and willpower to change and accomplish your goals.
Don’t expect instant changes over night. Have you ever heard of the expression Rome wasn’t built in a day? Permanent changes occur within time and at a slow pace. For example, if you want to include exercise in your schedule as a part of your self-care regimen, it may take weeks to build up the stamina needed to exercise on a daily basis. Studies have revealed that it can take a person on average, 18-254 days to form a new habit. Therefore, motivation and determination are key elements to develop new healthy habits and practice self-care.
When I had my second child, Luciana, I was left with unnecessary excess weight. Before I gave birth, I wasn’t as active as I was with my first child Ysabel. After having Luciana, I was determined to exercise on a daily basis to lose weight and increase energy. It has been almost two months, and my energy has increased significantly. I no longer dread taking the time to exercise, I actually look forward to it. Even though my weight loss journey has many miles to go, the progress that I have already seen gives me the encouragement that I need to not give up and continue to move forward. It is my personal self-care goal to become stronger, lose weight and have the energy necessary to keep up with my two kids.
Mamas, I want to remind you that self-care isn’t selfish, it’s actually very important. This new year is a new opportunity to take better care of yourself. Let’s make an effort in 2021 to improve our lives and not only to practice self-care but to also practice self-love. You are definitely worth it!
