Baby Bath Time Routine

My five month old, Luciana has a couple activities that she enjoys but one of her most favorite is bath time. My goal during bath time is to have her looking and smelling fresh as possible. In order to have her fresh without it being so time consuming, I have created a routine that is quick and easy to follow.

Luciana’s Bath Time Routine:

Before I put Luciana in the tub, I fill it up with water half way. I gather my products that I use for her which is the body wash, shampoo ( when I need to wash her hair), baby oil and cologne (yes there is such a thing called baby cologne, it smells so wonderful even I use it after I bathe. After the water is filled halfway, I sit her in the bath sling and the fun begins. I take a baby washcloth and put it under warm water to sprinkle all over her and she absolutely loves when I do it. After the water sprinkling ritual, I put a copious amount of Johnson’s Bedtime Moisture wash in lavender to create enough lather and bubbles to gently scrub away, making sure I scrub in between toes, rolls and underarms. I spend some extra time cleaning what I call the important areas which are the private area, bottom, neck and behind her ears. Once the cleansing process is complete, I use the same baby cloth to rinse the soap off thoroughly. After the bubbles are gone, I put about a palm full of cocoa butter and shea baby oil and rub it on her arms, neck, belly and legs while she is still in her baby sling, and then I put the baby cologne on the same parts. Now it’s time to wrap her warm with her towel to dry her completely. In order for her to have smooth and soft skin, first I use Johnson’s original baby lotion and then I use the Aveeno Baby lotion in lavender for calming purposes. Next I put her diaper and onesie on, to make her smell extra fresh I put a little baby cologne on her onesie.

Mamas, this routine will have your infant smelling fresh until the next morning. I have noticed after she takes a bath she is a lot happier and sleeps a little bit better. Follow this bath time routine and your baby will be smelling fresher than ever. Enjoy!

Bridgerton Review: Episode 1

For the next few weeks I will be giving my review on each episode of Bridgerton and how well I liked it. After I watched the whole season I will be giving my final review as well as my recommendation. Each episode is about an hour long and is set in the 1800’s. Personally I am a Jane Austen fan, and just seeing the first few seconds gave me a Pride and Prejudice vibe that made me even more intrigued. The narrator is Julie Andrews as Lady Whistledown which I think is a perfect selection because she speaks so proper and eloquent, in addition she is well-respected which brings more appeal to the show. The artwork that is displayed in each home is eloquent as well as the mansions that the pieces hang in. For those who have conservative mindsets, may not enjoy the first few minutes as it shows an intimate moment by a tree with Lord Bridgerton’s buttocks shining ever so bright in the camera as he is engaging in a raunchy act with his hushed lover, opera singer Siena Rosso. One feature the Jane Austen’s novels didn’t include was a variety of ethnicities in high rank rather than just portrayed as the help. Apparently the Queen Charlotte is of African descent and approves of Daphne Bridgerton, well at first. This series does include some language but not so much that it’s tasteless and hard to hear. The cast are all quite attractive which makes it easy to include a few more intimate scenes. As mentioned, if you are more conservative this might not be the show for you. These intimate scenes are unexpected and abrupt. There is of course a ball for the eligible ladies to seek and find a potential suitor of the highest rank possible. The dialogue is witty and impeccable. At the ball, Lord Bridgerton, is perceived rather protective of his sister, Daphne and persuades her to be more cautious when choosing a suitor. Lady Featherington is resentful that Miss Marina Thompson has so many more interested suitors than Daphne. Lord Berbrooke has grown increasingly infatuated with Daphne since the ball. Lady Bridgerton and Lady Danbury are scheming to discreetly unite Daphne and Lord Hastings at a dinner. Lord Anthony Bridgerton disapproves of his mother’s desire to match Daphne with Anthony’s friend Lord Hastings. Anthony persuades his sister Daphne to marry Lord Berbrooke but she quickly refuses. There is a hidden pregnancy revealed. The first episode really allows you to understand the intentions of each character. At the end of the episode there is a plot twist, after Daphne physically rejects Lord Berbrooke, Lord Hastings comes up with a brilliant idea to pretend to have an attachment to Daphne in order to increase eligible suitor’s interest for her and for mothers in town to leave him alone. I can foresee some scrumptious drama and suspense happening in future episodes. This show is my cup of tea! The way this show begins makes me excited to see the next episode and what awaits me there. I definitely recommend at least the first episode if you love Jane Austen, British literature, or the 1800’s era! Stay tuned for my review on episode two of Bridgerton!

Special Announcement: TV Show and Movie Reviews

To spice things up a bit I will be now reviewing shows and movies every Sunday. For this coming Sunday, I will be reviewing the show Bridgerton. I have heard great things already about this show so I am excited to start watching it (yes I still haven’t watched it yet but this will definitely give me motivation to). I will be giving my personal opinion on each episode and how well I like it. Please feel free to comment and share your experience watching the show and how well you liked or disliked it. I would love to hear from you. Remember mamas, self-care is sometimes watching a show that you can relate to by, yourself. Happy Friday!

Nine Year Age Gap

When I had my first daughter Ysabel, I was barely 22 years old and naive in so many ways. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t have any more children until I was mentally and financially stable. Before I had my second daughter Luciana, I was so focused on work and school that having another baby wasn’t one of my goals. When I found out, I was shocked because it has been nine years since having a baby, why now? I had six months left before I received my Masters in Psychology to further my career and I was steadily working full time. I am the type of person that likes to strategically plan things out and this was definitely not on my list. However, I was excited because I haven’t been pregnant in so long everything I was going through seemed brand new. I also knew Ysabel wanted a sibling considering she was the only child and grandchild. I figured this change would be the best for everyone. Fast forward to present day, I am glad that I waited nine years to have another child. I don’t have to change two diapers. My oldest can watch Luciana if I need to run to the bathroom. Ysabel is no longer the only child, therefore she doesn’t feel lonely. I have another cuddle buddy as well as an opportunity to teach another girl to be a strong and independent woman. I allowed my body to rest and for everything to go back to where it’s supposed to go. There are some that say “you should have had kids sooner so they will be close in age or there could be a lot of problems having kids in your 30’s.” Everyone has a different story and not every story will read the same. What works for you is not going to necessarily work for others, being judgmental is ugly and we are beautiful boss mamas. Mamas, even though we may plan for  our lives to happen a certain way doesn’t mean that there are not going to be surprises during our journey. Mama, your story is amazing, never feel ashamed of your past because it made you who you are today, a strong and relentless boss mama!

Self-Care Is Yoga

When I was in my early 20’s I used to be a dedicated yogi, practicing yoga almost daily. I remember feeling energetic and more centered. Over time, my life naturally changed and yoga was no longer a priority over other things. While I slowly let go of the practice of yoga I started to notice changes within myself. I was not as focused or energetic as I was when practicing it on a daily basis.

There are so many amazing benefits from yoga, it’s a shame that I gave it up for a brief period of time. Yoga improves focus, stability and flexibility. It can also be relaxing and help with sleep, which as of right now I am not able to enjoy this particular yoga benefit, considering I have a 5 month old and am barely hanging on with the amount of sleep that she allows me to have each night. However, for the ones whose kids are past this stage this can be very helpful if you suffer from insomnia. Also, for the mamas 30 and over, yoga can also help alleviate back pain! If you are suffering from depression, strike a yoga pose! It has been proven to reduce depressive moods.

One of the main reasons that I started practicing yoga again on a daily basis is  to manage stress better, have more energy as well as fight postpartum depression. I thoroughly enjoy yoga and look forward to it each day. It quickly has become one of my favorite things to do since I became a mama of two, it’s a nice break from my motherly duties.

Mama, start practicing today. Self-care is some yoga time, you will definitely be relieved that you did!

My Top Five Curly Girl Products

In order for me to tame my curls, products that actually work for my hair are essential. To better accommodate my curls, I had to study my hair from the porosity to the density of it. I have discovered that I am low porosity, low density with a type 3c/4a curl pattern. Knowing these certain facts about my hair, made it a lot easier finding products to nurture it. The following are my most favorite curly girl hair care products that worked the best for my hair and brought out my curl definition.

Seed Phytonutrients Anti-Frizz Cream- I mentioned this product in a previous post, and the review that I gave still stands. I absolutely love this cream! It smells amazing and it almost instantly eliminates frizz. It’s a little bit on the pricier side, retailing at  $19 but I believe that it’s well worth it, if you want to tame your mane and fight off frizz.

Doo Gro – Mega Thick Formula Hair Oil

This hair oil is truly a Godsend! This product has helped my hair grow, it easily saturates my low porosity hair and gives it the utmost nourishment. I typically use this product every other day, but especially after I wash my hair to replenish the necessary oil and give it the right hydration and moisture that it needs to survive on a daily basis. This oil is reasonably priced, retailing at $8.99, this lasts me usually a few months. It smells great as well. I am glad that I added Doo Gro to my hair care routine.

Design Essentials Natural Hair Almond & Avocado Leave-In Conditioner

This leave in conditioner almost left me speechless. The hydration and moisture that this product gave my low porosity hair is out of this world. After I apply this leave in conditioner, my hair is left feeling soft and looking radiant as well as smelling delicious. If you are a curly girl, I definitely recommend this leave in conditioner if you want your curls to pop and your hair to shine. This product is also reasonably priced, retailing at $12.99.

Design Essential For Natural Hair Almond & Avocado Moisture Primer Pre-Styling Whip

I don’t know why I wasn’t introduced to this product when I first started my natural hair journey because this is the truth! This whip is my hair’s bestie, it smells amazing and prepares my hair for the other products that I apply afterwards. I firmly believe that without this whip my curls wouldn’t be as poppin’. Pricing for this product is fair, retailing at $12.99.

Design Essentials Scalp and Skin Care Detoxifying Tonic

Considering that I have low porosity hair, I use the LCO method ( leave in conditioner, cream and oil) after applying my leave in and cream, I use this tonic and it does its job with locking in the hydration that my hair strands require. Reasonably priced, retailing at $7, I have zero complaints about this product other than I need to buy some more.

These are my top five favorite curly girl products. These products have definitely lessened frizz, moisturized and hydrated my scalp and hair strands as well as adding great definition to my curls, when I use all five. If you are a curly girl that is in desperate need of products that will work for your hair. I recommend my top five favorites’ list to accommodate your hair care needs!

It’s Okay To Take A Lazy Day

Mamas,

Have ever felt like you require a lazy day every now and then? If you have, you are definitely not alone. Personally, I love being busy and completing tasks and short term goals. I thrive on routines and abiding by a certain schedule for my girls to be on but even I need a break and crave to switch up my routine every once in a while and do absolutely nothing, but snuggle in my bed, watch movies and pig out. I believe as mothers, it should be absolutely mandatory to have a lazy day at least twice a month and we shouldn’t feel guilty about it, especially if it doesn’t happen very often.  We definitely need it and I believe that if we do take a lazy day, we will be refreshed and ready to go back to our normal schedules. Now I am not saying to neglect your job ( but if you need mental recuperation by all means use up that PTO) or not take a shower (which is none of my business if that’s what you want to do, I am definitely not judging sis) I am simply saying take a lazy day when you can and put off normal demands that are in your regular schedule, trust me those aren’t going anywhere. The weekend is officially here, so there is definitely some room and opportunity to take a lazy day and relax your mind, get some snuggles in with your kids and do absolutely nothing that you don’t want to do for a day. Go ahead mama, take a lazy day, you definitely deserve it!

The Importance Of Mixed Children Understanding Their Parent’s Culture

Both of my daughters are biracial. They are half black and half Mexican. I always try to incorporate both cultures in my daughter’s lives, whether it is celebrating and understanding black history month or what happened at the Alamo, I always want my daughters to be culturally well-rounded and informed. I believe that it’s necessary for children who are of a mixed race to know about their culture to prevent identity crisis.

If you have mixed children, give them some love and let them know that having more than one culture is beautiful as well. It has been proven that interracial children are more likely to be bullied than children who identify with just one race. Bullying is never okay, being bullied for being mixed  can leave a child with identity issues and self-hate. Having a discussion with your children to let them know how to handle if someone mistreats them because of their mixed race can boost their self-esteem and save them from a lot of heartache.

Some of the ways that I incorporate both cultures in my daughter’s lives is speaking both Spanish and English. My daughter Luciana is only 4 months but we speak to her in Spanish as well, so she can understand more clearly when she is older. We teach about our culture and celebrate specific cultural holidays to help them feel more accepted and proud of who they are. After COVID has finally subsided we plan on taking the girls to Mexico to experience Mexican culture for themselves.

Mamas, teach your children self- love and acceptance, by having them embracing their mixed culture, equally. No culture is better than the other and one culture shouldn’t be emphasized more than the other one. Teach them self-care by embracing the culture that makes them who they are!

A New Year, New Opportunity For Self-Care

As we transition into a new year and we ponder on how last year went, we may not have been completely satisfied with how much time, we, as mothers, incorporated self-care in our daily regimens. Do not be dismayed, 2021 can be the year to begin practicing self-care. Instead of new year resolutions, strive for positive lifestyle changes. You may think positive lifestyle changes are almost impossible to achieve. Be encouraged, because nothing is ever impossible if you have the right mindset and willpower to change and accomplish your goals.

Don’t expect instant changes over night. Have you ever heard of the expression Rome wasn’t built in a day? Permanent changes occur within time and at a slow pace. For example, if you want to include exercise in your schedule as a part of your self-care regimen, it may take weeks to build up the stamina needed to exercise on a daily basis. Studies have revealed that it can take a person on average, 18-254 days to form a new habit. Therefore, motivation and determination are key elements to develop  new healthy habits and practice self-care.

When I had my second child, Luciana, I was left with unnecessary excess weight. Before I gave birth, I wasn’t as active as I was with my first child Ysabel. After having Luciana, I was determined to exercise on a daily basis to lose weight and increase energy. It has been almost two months, and my energy has increased significantly. I no longer dread taking the time to exercise, I actually look forward to it. Even though my weight loss journey has many miles to go, the progress that I have already seen gives me the encouragement that I need to not give up and continue to move forward. It is my personal self-care goal to become stronger, lose weight and have the energy necessary to keep up with my two kids.

Mamas, I want to remind you that self-care isn’t selfish, it’s actually very important. This new year is a new opportunity to take better care of yourself. Let’s make an effort in 2021 to improve our lives and not only to practice self-care but to also practice self-love. You are definitely worth it!

Product Review: Seed Phytonutrients

Greetings Boss Mamas,

Every month I have a chance to try new self-care products, thanks to my subscription from Cocotique. Cocotique is a beauty box subscription that provides some of the best beauty and lifestyle products for women of color. I was particularly excited when my box arrived this month because of the product line Seed Phytonutrients. The most unique part of this brand is that it uses oil from seeds which is one of the main ingredients in their products. After the oil is extracting from the seeds, what is left is returned to farmers to have organic feed for their animals. Seed Phytonutrients is 95% natural, cruelty, paraben, sulfate, and gluten free, the products are also vegan with a natural fragrance. The most appealing part of the products is that they use eco-friendly compostable paper to make the bottles. I have been trying five products for about a week. I wanted to give an honest review on each product that I used from this line, so that it might help other mamas when shopping for self-care products.

Seed Phytonutrients Anti-Frizz Shampoo (8.5 fl.oz. for $18.00)

This shampoo is infused with jojoba seed oil to tame uncontrollable frizz. The texture is smooth and it felt so good on my hair. It provided a lot of slip to easily detangle my tight curls and coils which is always a plus for me. The smell is amazing, it reminds me of sandalwood and I still could smell it long after washing my hair with it. If you have frizzy prone hair and I would completely recommend this shampoo as it prevents hair disaster.

Seed Phytonutrients Anti-Frizz Conditioner ( 8.5 fl. Oz. for $18.00)

This anti-frizz conditioner is just as amazing as the shampoo, it, as well, is infused with jojoba oil which makes it smell so lovely. I normally use a lot of conditioner to support my coils and curls, however I used this once after I shampooed and once when co-washing and I still have a lot of product left. I noticed, after each use my hair is more manageable, soft and feels healthier. Just like the shampoo, I 100% recommend this for curly girls.

Seed Phytonutrients Anti-Frizz Smoothing Cream (2.5 fl. oz. for $19.00)

This cream is the absolute truth! It is infused with just about the same ingredients as its shampoo and conditioner counterparts but gives the hair just a little bit more love. The scent of this cream is orange flower and parsley aroma. This product completely tames my hair for aftershower care. The only con about this cream is that I wish there was more product in each tube, but other than that I love how my hair shines after each use.

Seed Phytonutrients Body Moisturizer (8.5 fl. oz. for $18.00)

This lotion has a smooth texture and soaks immediately into your skin, leaving it softer than ever. I am not a huge fan of the scent, but my daughter, Ysabel loves how it smells. She compares it to spearmint and bamboo. I compare it to wet wood, with a touch of musk. Even though I dislike the smell, this moisturizer does its job and provides hydration and moisture that your skin craves. I would definitely recommend this product for people who have drier skin and love muskier scents.

SeedPhytonutrients Gentle Facial Cleanser (8.5 fl. oz. for $28.00)

I must say, I am 100% satisfied with this facial cleanser. It’s rather difficult to find facial products because I have such sensitive skin. However, this gentle facial cleanser treats my skin, leaving it soft, radiant and clear after each wash. It has a light scent and washes my face clean without over drying. I will definitely be repurchasing this product in the future.

Overall, Seed Phytonutrients provides excellent, high quality products that will not disappoint. I also fully stand-by their mission to help farmers. These products are definitely a “treat yourself splurge” purchase as it is priced higher than drug store products, but the quality is not cheap and it will have you satisfied after each use. Mama, if you want to add high quality self-care products to your collection, treat yourself with Seed Phytonutrients.
